Dear Lon,

I was wondering if you can help me on some stuff. I have a small TV Station in Southern California and I need to have some production line in case of live event. Or live programs. I don’t need hi-def since I can only produce ATSC Standard (720 pixels × 480 lines with 16:9 aspect ratio)

Here is what I had in mind.
DJ type rack mount with wheels
so I can put everything inside and move it around easily.
4U Case for the Computer. NVidia 560ti, Intel i7-2700K Sandy Bridge, 8 GB RAM, Raid 0 with SSD and SATA 3
ATEM Television Studio or ATEM 1 M/E Production Switcher

I would like to have the following but not sure what to get
2 x SDI Camera for fixed position.
2 x PTZ SDI Camera
PTZ Controller
Wireless microphone
2 X HDMI Monitor (One for computer, one for viewing)

Also I was wondering if the ATEM can produce H.264 for IPTV so I can send it over internet to a Set Top Box and broadcast it from there.
I have bought an Amino 130, just need to figure out how to program it as set up box( it is brand new, nothing installed on it)
I am not sure if I should go with SDI Camera since they are so expensive or just get AV(Composite) camera and attach some convertor inside the rack.
In that case can 580 TVL Security System Camera do the job.
Not sure if you can be any help in Automation Brodcasting but right now I am using Masterplay On Air, I was wondering if you have other programs that might top this.
I also need live background( the green background which can be changed with a picture of video)

I am really new and inexperienced at this video production since my major is computer engineering.

The depth of CL&P’s disconnect is stunning. Case in point: Butler revisiting the “sorry” question during Thursday evening’s news conference, to issue a second non-apology. In the morning, he clearly started to say, “I’m pro—-” before judiciously self-editing. Owning up makes a difference. You are absolutely on point, Lon. This utility lacks any public affairs strategy much less disaster planning.

Excellent piece, Lon. I particularly like your point that “social media does not belong solely in the hands of PR officials.” Comcast realizes this to an extent. If I tweet that I’m having a problem with my service and use the hashtag #ihatecomcast, someone from the company will tweet back , ask me about the problem and suggest a solution.

Not that I condone this behaviour, but I think that technically Kagi acts as a ‘reseller’ rather than a ‘payment processor,’ so it is their ‘customer info,’ and Techspansion’s consent is not required in that sense.

Having said that: (allegedly) repackaging/distributing copyrighted code, even as a convenience (with a “convenience fee”) is quite another matter.

No they’re not involved with it either. Here’s the text of the disclaimer they put on the email:

“As of June 2011, VisualHub is a trademark of SmartDraw, LLC.

You really don’t understand the main point, do you.

I know you are feeling the pain that some of the important feature in video production are no longer avalible in FCPX, but GROW UP! All you are doing simply is whining. I’m glad that FCP finally changed the interface to something that people new to professional production would understand in one sitting. And I’m sure they are willing to replace you as new generation of video production specialist embrace the next generation technology found in FCPX.

Did Apple explicitly state they were discontinuing support? I don’t see
that announced anywhere other than they’re not selling the old versions any

Actually, with FCPX, Apple discontinues support for FCP7, FCP Studio 3, FCP Servers — and the programming infrastructure for FCPX is so drastically based on iMovie, that they are unable to use FCPX in a professional workflow environment.Without an FCP product that can continue the pipeline needed to run a professional shop, Professionals are faced with the realization that they must spend thousands if not millions of dollars to switch out Mac-based machines they’ve invested in for the past 10years, and start over with alternative solutions.

I hope this explanation provides you an insight on the dilemma professionals find themselves with the release of FCPX.

I use Final Cut Pro all the time. For ME, it’s been inefficient and prone to problems that take people offline and make them less productive. Look, nobody’s forcing hands here. Final Cut 7 still works just fine and will for the foreseeable future. But my fledgling startup needs efficiency and fast turnaround, something we haven’t been able to get out of Final Cut until now.

I love it when those that haven’t used Final Cut Pro seem to be experts with regard to what is necessary for someone else. Clearly, you don’t edit with multiple camera sources. Apple has neglected to include that. But, hey, you don’t need it so why should I? No copy/paste clip attributes. I suppose I can do this for each and every clip manually. Hey all my previous Final Cut projects won’t work here. You must be clueless if you think Final Cut Pro X is going to reduce my billable hours. Oh, that’s right. You’ve been using iMovie. Somehow I have a feeling that if the tables were turned, and Apple marketed an upgrade for iMovie that was really Final Cut Pro, you’d have a shit fit.

Are you talking about in the camera or through software? My suggestion is
that at this point it’s not a good idea to buy anything tape based. Solid
state is the new way to go and will ensure that you’re futureproof. I’ve
found Final Cut Pro to do some great slowmo through frame blending.

Great review on Amazon of the Canon HV-40, although I have a specific question which I was hoping you might be able to help me with. One of my particular needs in a camcorder is that it plays back footage smoothly in slow motion. Could you tell me please if this camcorder will play a smooth rolling image in slow motion or is it plagued with resultant inconsistencies? Thanks in advance, Oliver

Fantastic post! I especially agree with you about sharing living arrangements with other participants. From a financial standpoint, I was very lucky to live close enough to be able to commute. However, if there’s one thing I’d change, this would be it. I had a wonderful time, but I missed out on a lot of the sheer fun of the whole experience by not participating in activities surrounding the event (tours, dinners, get-togethers) and getting to know more of my fellow Tweeters on a personal level.
